HAWAII ISLAND – The summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa above 12,000 feet are under a Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service, in effect until noon on Saturday.

Forecasters say deep moisture in the trade wind flow is bringing freezing rain and snow showers to the upper slopes of the Big Island’s two massive volcanoes. Significant icing on roadways and strong winds blowing northeast at 10 to 20 mph are expected.

“Due to ice and hail,” read a message posted to the Mauna Kea Weather Center website at 6 p.m. Friday, “the access road to the summit is closed at the VIS until further notice. Thank you for your patience and understanding and we will update the road conditions as the weather unfolds.”

Temperatures on the mountain are expected to lower into the upper 20’s overnight, and will warm to the upper 30’s by Saturday afternoon.
