MAUNA KEA, Hawaii – Opponents of the Thirty Meter Telescope are upset that an ahu they helped build in June has been taken down by the Office of Mauna Kea Management. The ahu, named Uakoko, was constructed on June 24th, the day of the second round of arrests during the blockade of the TMT project. The ahu was reportedly bulldozed by a Mauna Kea Support Services employee. Prior to the building of the ahu, officials with the Office of Mauna Kea Management were specific about how unpermitted structures are handled on the mountain; they are usually dismantled after 30 days.
