Lā 161: in case you were wondering what the līpine ʻulaʻula (red ribbon) meant. It represents the support we have for our mōʻīwahine ʻo Liliʻuokalani. In 1893, the Hawaiian monarchy was illegally overthrown. In the following years, proposals were being made to annex Hawaii to America. Queen Liliʻuokalani wrote a letter to America, hand delivered, protesting the annexation. In this letter she put a red ribbon on the left side. We wear this red ribbon on our heart, to show our aloha and support for our queen in forever protesting the illegal annexation of Hawaii to America. MANA (Movement for Aloha No ka ʻĀina) started these red ribbons during the DOI meetings last year. Today, we celebrate Liliʻuokalniʻs 177th birthday. Hauʻoli lā hānau.
