Today, 11 protectors in total in two vehicles tried to access the Summit of Mauna Kea to conduct ceremony. They were told that they missed the only access time approved by the Governor which is supposedly at 1:00pm every day. The new enforced rule proceeds as such: 10 people and two vehicles allowed up with security escort at 1:00pm. No other time allowed. Astronomy vehicles are allowed access at any time. When the protectors asked to see the official letter from the Governor and or official paper work confirming this enforced rule, they were denied and told that it was a verbal agreement. When one of the officers was asked the questions, "what is your connection to the Mountain?", he replied smugly, "it's my paycheck." To deny access to the First Nations people of Hawai`i is blatant discrimination and a prime example of colonial oppression. CALL TO ACTION - Email or Call the office of Governor Ige to inquire about this new rule and to demand an explanation for the discrimination shown to the protectors of Mauna Kea.
